If you drive 15 kilometers to the west from Wukro, you will come to the Abraha We Atsbeha church, a rock church in one of the most scenic places in the region. It is one of the oldest churches and is known for its extraordinary interior decoration and its magnificent wall frescoes. Its ceiling is decorated with intricate patterns and its walls are littered with crosses carved into the stone. More than a dozen enormous pillars divide the interior of the church into several naves. Abraha we Atsbeha is undoubtedly a masterpiece inside the rock-hewn churches. According to local tradition, the church was built in the 4th century, but some scholars date the construction to the 10th century. In any case, it was built long before the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, with which the highly developed rock architecture reached its peak.
