NEGASH

Post by africangear »

Tigray is the cradle of Christianity in East Africa, but it also contributed to the growth and transformation of the other great world religion, Islam. The protection that Islam enjoyed in its early development in Tigray is one of the least known aspects of Tigray history. It is narrated that after the persecution by the merchants who ruled Mecca, the first group of followers of the Prophet Mohammed sought refuge in Tigray, which the Prophet calls the kingdom of a "just king" where "no one is wronged". The Prophet's followers settled and were buried in Negash, 60 kilometers north of Mekelle, the capital of Tigray. Negash is the second holiest city in the Islamic world after Mecca. This led to the prophet exempting Tigray from jihad, the holy Islamic war.
