The Capture of Public Institutions in Tigray

TPLF's grip on Tigray's public institutions is tightening day by day. They are systematically occupying key positions, replacing relatively apolitical leadership with cadres that are obedient. Their ultimate goal is unmistakable: to restore a pure tyranny that dominates every political and public institution, seizes all military and civil authorities, and concentrates power in the hands of the few.

Having hijacked the machinery of security, they are now targeting the biggest non-governmental organizations in the region, the Tigray Development Association (TDA) and the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigray (EFFORT). The move is a calculated attempt to pursue complete economic, social, and political domination, using it as a tool of oppression to stampede the entire Tigray region.

At the moment, TDA leadership is predominantly in the hands of Debretsion's faction in the TPLF. Following their previous experience with the security apparatus and EFFORT, this should give anyone concerned about the independence of NGOs and Civil Society Organizations in Tigray goosebumps.

This is not politics, this is the clear establishment of a totalitarian regime. It is the beginning of a police state in which all facets of life are monitored and managed. It is the destruction of any hopes of democracy in Tigray.

We cannot allow this to continue. Turning a blind eye is tantamount to embracing an even deeper suffering for the people of Tigray. It is tantamount to betraying the dream of building a democratic system and achieving true rehabilitation in the post-war era.

This dangerous trend must be stopped. Public and non-profit institutions must be kept from political interference. They should be working for the people, not the cause of a repressive party like TPLF.

The people of Tigray deserve freedom, democracy, and real recovery - not another era of repression. We must get ourselves heard now, before we are too late.
