Dutch parliament passes motion regarding the human rights situation in Tigray

The Dutch Parliament passed a motion Thursday calling on the government to promote the setting up of a UN fact-finding mission to investigate alleged war crimes committed by the parties involved in the Tigray crisis.

The last debate before the elections took place on Thursday 25 February. A member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), Martijn van Helvert submitted three motions during the VAO Foreign Affairs Council. These motions concern the human rights situation in China, Armenia and the situation in Tigray. This week he had also an interactive live session about Tigray on social media, which he did included the points raised as input into his motion on Tigray.

Motion 3: Situation in Tigray

After hearing the deliberation, noting that a bloody civil war is being fought in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia where human rights are being violated on a large scale,

Considering that millions of people in this region are facing famine, but humanitarian aid organizations are not allowed to enter the area,

Calls on the government within the United Nations and the European Union to call for more pressure towards Ethiopia and Eritrea to end the violence and to admit international aid workers as well as emergency aid to the area as soon as possible,

Calls on the government to promote the setting up of a UN fact-finding mission to investigate alleged war crimes committed by the parties involved, as soon as the situation permits,

Calls on the government to find support within the UN for the establishment of a UN evidence bank for war crimes committed in Tigray.
